Chipworks: Omnivision 8MP Sensor in Motorola Phones

Chipworks' Motorola Razor smartphone teardown revealed Omnivision OV2B3BA 8 MP, 1.4um pixel BSI sensor. This is the same CIS as was also found in another high-end smart phone from Motorola: the Droid Bionic XT875.

Chipworks also published a complete reverse engineering report on Sony IMX-145 sensor found in iPhone 4S. The sensor is 8MP, 1.4um BSI pixel.

  1. I guess we shouldn't be burying OV just yet.

  2. Neither should you have thought about burying OVT, nor celebrate Motorola Razor success yet.
It does not change the fact that OVT BSI has some cost problem, which is a serious problem for a commodity product company.

  3. although you should not count your chickens before they hatch, it is now fair to say that wallstreet types will be disturbed that after all the hype ovt disseminated over its leading edge bsi-2, that motorola chose bsi-1 either because they liked it better than bsi-1 for whatever reason or because bsi-2 was not available for whatever reason. either way, that RIGHT NOW is a negative for ovt that may diminish the value of an ovt win in the eyes of the market. you guys have been great in sharing your cis technology background so i thought i'd share something from my wallstreet background with you.

  8. So why is Sony increasing it fab capacity to much? Apple will pay a premium for a quality product but not for poor yield
